Instagram Double Notifications (5 Ways To Stop It)

Do you keep getting Instagram double notifications? I understand how annoying it can be.

But don’t worry, it’s not just you. There have been a lot of reports of Instagram sending people notifications twice.

From the looks of it, this seems to be an Instagram or IOS bug. And the bad news is there’s nothing much we can do about it until they release a new update.

However, if it’s annoying, you can turn off all notifications for Instagram – which is what most people did.

In this post, I’ll shed some light on why you get Instagram push notifications twice and a few ways to stop it from happening.

Why Am I Getting Double Notifications On Instagram

The main reason why Instagram is sending you notifications twice is because there’s a bug in the instagram app.

Like any other tech product, Instagram keeps adding new updates or features; this new code could introduce bugs into the system. Instagram has over a million lines of code so imagine debugging that.

Now the interesting thing about this double notification issue is that the majority of people with this issue are iPhone users – only a very few Android users reported this.

This could mean it could be a bug in iPhone software.

How To Stop Instagram Sending Double Notifications

Let’s go over some of the things we can do to stop double notification. All of these methods (one or another) worked for users but there is a chance these might not work too.

Update Instagram

If there is a new update available in the App Store, go ahead and do the update.

New updates will often have bug fixes and tons of other improvements. Updating will fix this issue 9 out of 10 times.

Update Your Phone

As I said, this primarily happens on iPhones, so it could be an issue or bug with the current / older IOS versions.

The new software update will come bundled with fixes for bugs and improved performance features. So, if there’s an update available, get it updated – it’ll never do your device any harm.

Turn Off Siri Suggestion Notifications

This is a solution that seems to have worked for a lot of people.

I’ll be honest here, I am a long-time Android user and know nothing about Apple. But from what I read, it seems like “Siri Suggestions” is duplicating Instagram notifications.

I don’t know if this feature means actual app notifications or notifications about apps from Siri.

Anyways here’s how this works – Head over to settings – Siri Suggestions and disable Allow Notifications.

Turn Off Siri Suggestion Notifications

If they are already off, turn them back on, restart your iPhone, and then turn them off.

If this doesn’t work, I would just turn off all notifications for Instagram except for direct messages. If you are an Android user, here’s how to do that.

Try Normal Troubleshooting

Do things like these to see if it fixes instagram double notifications:

  • Logging out of your account and then logging back in
  • Reinstalling Instagram
  • Clearing app cache
  • Restarting your device

Hard Reset Your Phone

This is another fix that worked for a couple of people – but it’s not so simple or convenient.

But it’s worth a try if you can’t bring yourself to turn off notifications completely.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Log out of your Instagram account
  2. Uninstall Instagram
  3. Hard reset your iPhone
  4. Install everything again including Instagram and login
Hard Reset Your Phone

I don’t know for sure why this would work but resetting would probably reset the iPhone software, which we know could be a potential cause.

Wait Until Instagram Fixes It

If none of these worked, the only thing that’s left to do is wait until Instagram fixes it.

Who knows it might be fixed in the next update.

But if I am being honest, I saw Reddit posts about this bug dating back to 2017, so I don’t think they might focus on this bug specifically.

That being said, only a very small percentage of people have this issue, which means the next update (Insta or IOS) might just fix it for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Does Instagram Send Me Old Notifications

Instagram sending old notifications is rather uncommon but it could happen and the only reason behind it is probably a bug or glitch in the app. The next update will fix the issue. In the meantime, if it’s annoying, you can turn off notifications.

Why Is Instagram Not Sending Notifications?

Instagram will not send notifications if you have turned off notifications from the app or your phone. Other than that, it could be a temporary bug that will get fixed with the new update.
